During this week's lab, we used spatial analysis to determine the impacts and consequences of storm surges and costal flooding. In order to achieve this analysis, we first used raster data on elevation (if it was not already raster data we had to convert it using the LAS to Raster tool), and then reclassify all values within the raster to either 1 or NODATA based on whether they were above predicted flooding elevations or not. I then changed the raster data into a polygon and used select by attribute in order to choose buildings that would be effected by the flooding if they intersected with the polygon, and predicted flooding based on this. My biggest challenge in this lab was determining how to properly reclassify the raster data set. In order to reclassify the raster, the symbology must be changed first using the manual breaks method, and then the data to be reclassified can be tweaked before it is processed. The above imagery is new build housing overlayed across old damage caused by a storm surge, where a large loss in elevation is highlighted in red. It can be inferred based on the shape of the red space the area was once a house, which was not rebuilt.
