When designing map
typography to be legible, I used the same font in different styles in a color
that was not used in the map, as well as differences in size and placement. For
the general features I used a large 36 point font and a very legible typeface
(Arial). I did not distort the type at all, so the words were the most
noticeable. I made San Francisco slightly larger as well. For water features, I
used an italic narrow style and dark blue font to stand out against the water but
still maintain a lower hierarchal stance than the general features. For
topographic features I created curved text and used narrow italics with grey
font. I used regular font in similar colors to the general features for the
landmarks and park names in order to maintain consistent style and still create
a distinct difference between these features and topographic and water
features, while keeping them smaller than general features.
